LKAB has an interest in increasing the capacity on the railway lines which carry their products to the harbours in Narvik and Luleå. One way of doing this is to increase the axle loads. Originally the iron ore line (Malmbanan) was built for an axle load of 18 tons. The allowable load was increased to 25 ton in the 1950ies. In the 1990ies a series of investigations were carried out with the aim to increase the axle load to 30 ton. Nowadays many of LKAB:s competitors use 40 to 50 ton on their railways and it is of interest to study what the possibilities are and what the costs would be to increase the allowable loads to 37,5 ton, 40 ton, 42,5 ton and further.
